The descriptive chemistry has been updated. Results from the recent literature that have been incorporated will make students aware of how current research contributes to the development of modern inorganic chemistry. On going from the first to the second edition of the text, we significantly modified the chapters on symmetry and molecular orbital theory. We have also significantly altered the discussion of term symbols and microstates in the introduction to electronic spectroscopy of d-block metal complexes.
During the writing of the three editions of Inorganic Chemistry, the IUPAC has put forward a wide range of recommendations in a series of reports. The recommendation to write, for example, 6.
The new edition of Inorganic Chemistry incorporates the recommendation. A major overhaul of inorganic chemical nomenclature was published in the recommendations of the IUPAC, and we are grateful to Professor Neil Connelley for answering a number of our queries. After careful consideration, we have decided to adopt some, but not all, changes.

Working on the fourth edition has been a very different experience for me compared to the previous editions of the book.
Dr Alan Sharpe passed away a few months after the publication of the third edition. He was not one for computers, and his contributions and corrections came to me in longhand by regular mail from the UK to Switzerland.
I have missed his thought provoking letters and comments, and I dedicate the new edition of the book to his memory. No writing project is complete without input from my husband, Edwin Constable.
His critical evaluation of text and problems is never ending, but always invaluable. The writing team in our home is completed by Rocco and Rya whose boundless energy and feline mischief seem to outweigh their eagerness to learn any chemistry … perhaps with time.
