The three years of required experience may be satisfied as follows: Two years of full time or equivalent experience as a credentialed school psychologist in public schools. This experience can be unsupervised and needs to be obtained in the most recent six years from the time a person applies for licensure.
AND One of the Following: One year of supervised professional experience in an accredited school psychology program can be older than six years from the time the person applies for examination eligibility OR One year of full time or equivalent experience as a credential school psychologist in public schools obtained under the direction of a licensed educational psychologist or a licensed psychologist. Since schools occasionally change program curriculum and course descriptions, the list below may not reflect these changes. Please contact the school directly to ensure that the degree program meets the educational requirements for licensure. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the applicant to comply with all requirements for licensure.
The Board does not publish a list of schools with LPCC programs, which are based outside of California, online or otherwise. Submit original signed Supervision Agreement and Verification of Experience form in a sealed envelope signed across the seal by your primary supervisor. If your application is incomplete, the Board will request additional information from you in order to proceed with the review. The examination vendor, Psychological Services, Inc. PSI , will notify you within 48 hours regarding how to schedule your examination.
You can only take each version of the examination once. New versions of the examinations are available on the first of January, April, July and October.
This status can be held for only six years. A candidate will need a total of at least 3, hours of supervised experience; up to 1, hours of pre-doctoral experience may be counted. Candidates must make sure they are working lawfully while earning experience hours. Formal internships are acceptable if they are accredited by the American Psychological Association or are members of the California Psychology Internship Council or the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers.
If a candidate is not working at an exempt setting such as a university and has not been granted a waiver by the Department of Mental Health, he or she must hold a state credential while accruing experience hours. Psychologists who are earning hours through this pathway must have a licensed psychologist who is an employee of the agency available at all times. It is also acceptable to apply for this status after the doctoral degree has been conferred.
A psychological assistant will need an hour a week of direct supervision from a licensed psychologist or board certified psychiatrist; no fee may be charged for supervision. The supervisor will submit a form certifying that the psychological assistant is performing at the level necessary to ensure patient safety. The Board notes that supervisees should read and thoroughly understand regulations as hours are frequently denied.
A candidate may begin post-doctoral practice before the ceremonial awarding of the degree, but will need evidence that requirements administrative as well as substantive were met.
