Your doctor will let you know if there are any problems with your reproductive tract. They can prevent more serious disease and change as you age. A pelvic exam is a visual and physical examination of a woman's reproductive organs.

Speculums come in various sizes, including smaller, pediatric sizes. Before the Exam Pelvic Exam. Vulvar and Speculum Examination Pelvic Exam. Examine the vulvar region looking for erythema or other rashes. Place lubricant on both index finder of non-dominant hand and warmed speculum. Insert index finger into base of vagina. Open speculum and adjust until the cervix is in sight and lock open. If planned, conduct pap smear and STD testing Note: a little bleeding especially if patient nulliparous after a pap smear is expected.
